How to Get Your IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

An IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that helps prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS, and it adds an extra layer of security to your tax filings.

Why Get an IP PIN?

  • Protects against tax-related identity theft
  • Required for e-filing if you’ve opted in or are a victim of identity theft
  • A new IP PIN is issued each year

How to Get Your IP PIN

The fastest way to get your IP PIN is online:

  1. Go to the official IRS IP PIN page: Get an identity protection PIN | IRS.gov[irs.gov]
  2. Sign in to your IRS Online Account. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to register and verify your identity.
  3. Once logged in, select “Get an IP PIN” under your profile.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the process. Your IP PIN will be displayed online.

Alternatives if you can’t get your IP PIN online:

  • Form 15227: If your adjusted gross income is below the IRS threshold, you can apply by mail using Form 15227. The IRS will call you to verify your identity and then mail your IP PIN.
  • In-person: Schedule an appointment at a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center for identity verification. Bring a government-issued photo ID and another document to prove your identity.
  • By phone: If you’ve lost your IP PIN or can’t retrieve it online, call the IRS at 800-908-4490 for assistance.

Important Tips

  • Your IP PIN is valid for one calendar year. You’ll need a new one each year.
  • Only share your IP PIN with your trusted tax professional when you’re ready to file.
  • The IRS will never call, email, or text you to request your IP PIN.
